GAS LOGS IN DALLAS, TX: ALL ABOUT GAS FIREPLACES

With fall and winter fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to heat your home.  With a gas fireplace fitted with gas logs in Dallas, TX, you can warm up any room in your home and create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere at the same time.  You could choose a traditional, wood-burning fireplace; but once you learn about gas fireplaces and everything they offer, the choice to go with gas will be a simple one.

Why Gas Is Better Than Wood
The main reason you should choose a gas fireplace with gas logs in Dallas, TX is that it will heat your home more efficiently than wood.  No matter what type of gas fireplace you choose – an insert used to retrofit an existing firebox or a brand-new built-in – you’ll get a room filled with a mix of warm air and radiant heat.  With a wood-burning fireplace, much of your heat will be lost through the chimney.  After heating efficiency, the reason to choose gas is convenience.  With gas fireplaces, you can have heat and flames with the flick of a switch, with no tending and minimal cleanup.  You won’t have to trudge outside in the cold to get wood, worry about the fire hazard that sparks from a wood fire create or sweep and bag ashes constantly.

Gas Fireplace Choices
Your gas fireplace can be fueled by either natural gas or propane.  Natural gas is slightly less expensive and produces a little more heat than propane.  If there is no natural gas available in your area, choose propane.  Your other option is a vented or a vent-free fireplace.  Vented fireplaces vent the fumes from the logs to the outside while vent-free fireplaces discharge all of their heat and exhaust into the house.  Once you’ve selected the type of fireplace you want, you should have technician certified by the National Fireplace Institute install it for you to ensure that it is safe and installed properly.

Where Gas Fireplaces Work Best
Gas fireplaces are the perfect choice for just about any room in your home, even rooms you hadn’t thought to heat with a gas fire.  Dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and even outdoor spaces can be outfitted with gas fireplaces to keep them warm in the winter time and if you choose vent-free, then you can put a fireplace anywhere without the restriction of outside access for venting.

Upgrades To Look For
These upgrades for your gas fireplace can make it work more efficiently and conveniently:
  ▪ An electronic ignition that eliminates the need for a pilot light, which will save you money in fuel costs
  ▪ A variable flame-height adjustment lets you set the height of the flames – and the heat output – with the turn of a dial
  ▪ A built-in fan that that pulls indoor air behind the firebox and pumps warm air out, which can warm a room up quickly
  ▪ A battery backup to ensure the fireplace will work – and give you heat – during a winter power outage

If you’re ready to snuggle up in front of a warm fireplace this winter, come see us at Jackson’s Home & Garden for a great selection of gas logs in Dallas, TX to outfit your gas fireplace.  You can visit us online at www.jacksonshg.com or give us a call at (214) 350-9200 to find out more.

Christmas Trees In Dallas, TX: How To Choose An Artificial Tree

It’s that time of year again – time to start thinking about all things Christmas.  And if you’re looking for Christmas trees in Dallas, TX, there’s no better place to find one than at Jackson’s Home & Garden.  At Jackson’s we have a wide variety of artificial trees to choose from in a range of sizes to fit any home.  If you’ve never had an artificial Christmas tree before – or even if you’re looking to replace an older one – here are some things to keep in mind when choosing an artificial tree:
❅ Size
Artificial trees come in a wide range of sizes from 3’ tabletop models to 12’ sizes for homes with vaulted ceilings or grand foyers.  If you’re looking for a standard, full-sized tree, you’re likely going to find them in a height range of 6’ to 7.5’ to accommodate the 8’ ceilings in most homes.  Artificial trees today also come in two or three different widths from full to narrow to slim.  Think about the space your tree will occupy when you decide on height and width and remember that the narrower your tree is, the less branch length you’ll have for hanging ornaments.
❅ Style
Though all artificial Christmas trees in Dallas, TX are made from the same materials – polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or molded polyethylene (PE) or a combination of both, tree styles can range from traditional to realistic depending on which material is used.  Both can replicate the look of real pine, fir or other evergreens.  If you’re looking for a nontraditional color, you can find trees in black, white, pink, silver and more.  If it’s a traditional-looking tree you want, colors include a mix of greens, blues and blue/greens.  For the most realistic appearance, look for trees that have brown coloring or wrapping on the trunk and branches.   Some trees come with pinecones or holly berries attached or are sprayed with flocking to look snow-covered.
❅ Lights
Artificial trees today can be purchased pre-lit with clear or multi-color LED or incandescent bulbs.  The bulbs can twinkle, shimmer or even change colors.  They can also be controlled with an attached foot pedal.  The best trees feature stay-lit bulbs, which means that if one bulb burns out or is removed, the rest will still stay lit.
At Jackson’s Home & Garden, we can help you to outfit your home for the holidays with beautiful decorative items, trees, ornaments and more.  Give us a call at (214) 350-9200 to find out more or go online to www.jacksonshg.com to take a look at our Christmas 2015 department.

Christmas Trees In Dallas, TX: The 5 Most Popular Christmas Trees

If you’re gearing up for the holiday season ahead and you’re thinking about buying the most important element of your Christmas decorating – the tree – you need to come and see our selection of Christmas trees in Dallas, TX at Jackson’s Home & Garden.  At Jackson’s, we have a great selection of sizes and styles for you to choose from; but, to make choosing the right tree easier, we think you should know what the U.S. Forest Service says are the most popular varieties of real trees.  Once you know the kind of real tree you like, you can quickly choose its artificial counterpart so that you can get the look you want but in a tree that will last for many years.
1.   Fraser Fir

The Fraser fir is the perfect tree for holiday decorating because of its dark green, inch-long needles that are soft to the touch.  The branches are firm and easy to decorate because of the space between the branches.  Fraser firs also tend to have the perfect shape for a Christmas tree, which may be why they are the trees most chosen as the official White House Christmas tree.

     Douglas Fir

The Douglas fir isn’t a true fir tree; it actually has its own unique species classification.  One of the main – and most noticeable – differences between true firs and the Douglas fir is that the Douglas fir has downward-hanging cones.  These trees naturally grow into a cone shape and have 1 to 1 ½-inch needles that make it easy to decorate.

     Balsam Fir

The Balsam fir has a beautiful, pyramidal shape with short, flat, long-lasting needles.  It is dark green in color which makes it a perfect backdrop for all types of ornaments and color schemes.

     Colorado Blue Spruce

The blue spruce, like the Douglas fir, has a natural, symmetrical, conical shape that makes it an ideal choice for a Christmas tree.  In addition, the foliage of the tree, which ranges from dark green to powdery blue, can look silver from certain angles.  The limbs are strong and the needles are 1 to 3 inches long, making it perfect for ornament hanging.

     Scotch Pine

Though the Scotch pine has sharp needles, which doesn’t make it ideal for decorating, it is still one of the most popular trees because of its excellent needle retention.  It has stiff branches and two bundled, dark green needles that are 1 to 3 inches long.  It also has a nice, pyramidal shape that makes it look full even with a minimal amount of decorations.

Gas Logs In Dallas TX: What You Need To Know About Gas Logs

With some North Texas stores stocking their shelves with Halloween candy and others even setting up Christmas tree displays, it could get you daydreaming about sitting in front of a crackling fireplace, sipping hot cocoa.  Cooler fall weather is coming so it’s time to go out and buy the cocoa and the gas logs in Dallas, TX.

Why gas logs and not real wood?  Because wood fires require constant attention, they’re messy, they pose a potential fire risk and, unless you live on a tree farm, getting and keeping a stack of firewood isn’t always easy or convenient.  Gas logs are maintenance-free, come in a variety of styles, can often be operated with a remote control and often put out twice as much heat as real wood.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, there are some things you should know about the two types of gas logs on the market:
◆ Yellow-Flame Logs

Yellow-flame logs produce a realistic and attractive fire.  In fact, they’re often mistaken for real wood fires.  The heat output from yellow-flame logs is roughly comparable to the heat from a wood fire.  Yellow-flame logs are sometimes referred to as ‘vented’ logs because they require fireplace venting to be used safely.  They generate soot and carbon, which is deposited in your chimney, which will require regular chimney cleaning to prevent buildup.
◆ Blue-Flame Logs

Blue-flame logs are designed to produce a lot more heat than yellow-flame logs; but while they burn hotter, they also burn cleaner than yellow-flame gas logs in Dallas, TX.  Generally, blue-flame log fires aren’t as realistic or attractive as yellow-flame.  A special type of blue-flame log is called an ‘unvented’ or ‘vent-free’ gas log and may be approved for installation in a wood-burning fireplace with the damper closed or in a separate firebox cabinet without a chimney.

Both types of gas logs can be purchased to use either liquid propane (LP) or natural gas.  If your home already has gas appliances, like a stove or water heater, then you can purchase a natural gas log set.  Natural gas doesn’t burn as hot as liquid propane but it’s less expensive.  If you don’t have natural gas service to your home or in your area, you should choose a liquid propane log set.  LP burns three times hotter than natural gas; but, you’ll have to have an LP tank set up outside your home that will need to be refilled periodically.
